Semper Fidelis. Always Faithful. The motto of the United States Marine Corps.

Words to live by.

On the ragged edges of civilization, Corporal Michael Collins has lived those words, taking on riots and evacuations, rebels and terrorists. Asteroid belt patrol is just another deployment. Ninety nine percent boredom, one percent terror.

But soon the platoon of Marines find themselves entangled in the threads of a conspiracy of corporate greed, government corruption, piracy, and a band of war criminals.

As the fire team leader struggles with tensions in the close knit unit, Collins and his fellow Marines find themselves outnumbered in a pitched battle to stop a corrupt land grab that seems right out of the Old West, but on a new, wider, more unforgiving frontier. And now he must confront the harsh demands of being “always faithful.”

Semper Fi. Words to live by.

Words to die by.

Time to earn that combat pay, Marines. Welcome to the Suck.

And remember, you volunteered for this.

Patrick LeClerc has crafted a tense, military action adventure on the edge of civilization Earth’s mining colonies in the asteroid belt. “In Every Clime and Place” combines the spirit of classic s/f of Heinlein’s “Starship Troopers” or David Drake’s “Hammer’s Slammers” with the isolated, small unit grunt’s eye view intimacy of George MacDonald Fraser’s “Quartered Safe Out Here.”

"In Every Clime and Place” is a frontier land grab; a tale of government corruption and corporate piracy, and a near future Marine science fiction story, told with gritty authenticity, gallows humor and raw emotion, evoking the closeness and isolation of a small unit deployed to the distant edge of a bleak and dangerous frontier.

Excellent storytelling, much better than average military sci-fi, good character development for the type of plot, good dialogue. I gave his first book a rare 5-star review and this second book is another one. Of the two books (quite different) I liked the humor in the first book better, but I have to admit this is the only criticism I can really make.

Pretty standard military sci-fi but interesting characters, well written action sequences, a realistically high body count without getting too far into the splashy gore descriptions, a good touch of political underhandedness.

An author versatile enough that I'm looking forward to see where he goes with his next book although I would be delighted for a second book continuing with either set of characters.

In Every Clime and Place eBook Patrick LeClerc Reviews

For me the story line was too unfocused. The bouncing back and forth was too much. The idea of spacefaring marines and the US big business interests committing murder and mayhem is over the top. While business is interested only in itself, for the most part, this is too unbelievable. It is an interesting read but not great, in my view.
Nitty-gritty Marine individual, squad, and platoon action in the not so distant future. Watching the hot spots, and protecting civilians in spite of corporate greed and black "intelligence agency" maneuvering. The Fleet Marines battle pirates and rebels in battles that are a direct result of greed and arrogance. A really good book, well worth the effort for any fan of military science fiction, told primarily in the first person at squad level, it creates the environment of Earth's Solar System in the near future.
This book is worth your time.
I'm a huge fan of sci-fi, with a strong appreciation for military sci-fi. I try to give new authors a chance, and in this case it paid off. In Every Clime and Place is really well-written and very enjoyable. It reads more like a military fiction set in the near future rather than a future military story. I'm sure that was done on purpose to give the story more of a sense of realism, and it works. The story focuses on the characters, not the environment. It's a quick book -- at 250+ pages, I read it in 2 days. Mainly because I didn't want to put it down. The story is closer to a Tim O'Brien Vietnam story than a space warfare saga -- the story of Marines humping their load through Ganymede instead of rice paddies. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Corporal Mick Collins and his squad mates are Marines in a future chiefly distinguished from the present by space travel. Thus, the story is a pretty traditional one, following a few characters in and out of actions that are driven by recognizable motivations. No aliens are involved. It is well written and enjoyable enough to warrant a sequel.
Outstanding military science fiction! Others have reviewed the plot, pacing, and science . So, I'll focus on the dialog. Wow! This is some of the best dialog I've read from a new author. Almost no intrusive description - LeClerc uses the device of news reports to advance the story components outside of the narrator's experience. The wisecracking and verbal fencing is lifelike and totally believable. The trading of insults is hysterical. The book just seemed real and alive to me. More, Patrick, more. Time to get Collins recalled to duty and make him an intel officer.
Mr LeClerc has a definite gift. His writing reminds me of Robert Heinlein and Jerry Pournelle , praise indeed. The characters and dialogue are completely believable. The plot line is a clear case of big business and government clandestine services against military honor and integrity. The Marines in this future based story are dedicated to their country but put their faith in other Marines. I am a peace loving grandmother who enjoys well written action stories but deplores gore for gore's sake. This story did not misuse battle scenes.
I hope my short review encourages more people to read this and other writings of Patrick LeClerc because I want him to continue writing so I can read and enjoy his work. He is e published so we readers need to support him.
First of all a couple of disclaimers, 1) I am a US Marine (ok I don't wear the uniform and haven for a long time but I earned the right) 2) I was a corporal in the Corps.

So I like stories about Marine Corps Corporals who liberate stuff from the US Army ( Not that I ever did-Thank you Gunny Knudson)

This was a fun read about Marines at the sharp end of the stick, in the not to distance future. It is a fun ride by an author I had not tried before/

All I have to say is Semper Fi and try not to let the sand eat your you know what. This is fun read/
